Report on the Strand Club Annual Outing

14th June 2017

On a beautiful summer’s day twenty of us congregated on Overstrand High Street to board our Sanders coach to Horning. We were horrified to find a stranded school bus in the middle of the road and its frantic driver phoning for help. All traffic maneouvred its cautious way around it and our excellent driver was unfazed by the obstacle. We climbed aboard a little further down the street and he reversed expertly round a tight corner to a round of applause!

Then we were off, collecting four more of our friends in Trunch on the way. We arrived in Horning at 12.30, in good time for an exploratory wander around the pretty village and its interesting shops, a lovely lunch in the place of our choice – many of them with gardens looking out on to the water – to meet at 2.30 by the dock for the Southern Comfort Mississippi paddle boat.

The boat trip was magical with the strong sun gleaming on the water and the reeds alongside, highlighting the beautiful waterside homes, many thatched with those same reeds. We had an hour and a half of peaceful meandering through the shining waterways before returning to Horning and our coach. We had invited our Sanders driver to join us on the boat, which he did with delight.

Our journey home was gentle and uneventful – no more stranded buses!

Please join us at our next meeting if you would like to try us out. We are a friendly group and everyone is welcome. On 12th July Age UK will be coming to tell us the wide range of ways they can help us. The meeting will start as usual at 2.00 pm in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand and visitors are charged just £2 at the door. This includes light refreshments. Raffle tickets are always available separately at every meeting.

We hope to see you there.
