Overstrand Evening WI. At the February meeting on a very cold winters night we were very pleased to welcome our speaker Zandra Mackay who transported us to warmer climes as she gave us a captivating glimpse into her time spent in South Africa. Emigrating to accompany her husband who had postings in Cape Town and later Durban, she entertained us with her varied experiences, some good – cases of very good wine at unbelievably cheap prices, and others less enviable – snakes and enormous hailstones which necessitated windows being protected with wire mesh. During her twelve year stay she commented on the many changes she had seen in that supposedly idyllic country, and has decided not to return as she preferred to remember it as it was. Members saw photos of the green hearts for the `Show the Love` (for the planet) campaign and heard how a small group had got together and painted the hearts with sentiments such as `Love our World`, `Respect` and `Think`. They joined other Green Hearts hanging in the railings of St Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich.
Next month we look forward to hearing from Leonie Barnett, sister of Joe Orton, the well known playwright.
We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don’t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.
