Overstrand Parish Council

Strand Club Report for March 2019

The AGM of the Strand Club took place on the 13th March. It was well attended and to our delight we were able to welcome two new members. We hope they will thoroughly enjoy the speakers and activities we have lined up for the coming year.

Our Chairman took us through last year’s programme, outlining some particular favourites and reminding us of some excellent speakers. We loved our special visit to Templewood, when Eddie Anderson introduced us to the people who had built and lived in the magnificent house via their portraits. He then went on to talk about the fantastic ceiling in the salon and the stories behind its design.

The club outing was to Gressenhall Workhouse and Museum in the summer and this was very popular and much enjoyed by everyone, particularly the black piglets and the magnificent Shire horses.

We welcomed Stephanie and Ali from Seal and Shore Watch in April who brought slides of some of the many seals rescued along our coast. They reminded us of the importance of being aware of how we dispose of our rubbish – several seals being slowly strangled by discarded frisbees and fishing lines.

The Old Rock Shop Bistro provided us with, and served, an excellent Spring Lunch in May and so impressed were we that we have booked them again for this year. Highly recommended.

After the business was concluded we welcomed our own Miriam and Tony who entertained us with a musical quiz based on television theme tunes which Tony played and which delighted us and made us think in equal measure. Every now and then Miriam would sing a classic love song from a much loved show and transported us with her beautiful soaring voice – every note true and sweet and full of feeling.

Our club is a happy, friendly place and we look forward to welcoming visitors (and further new members!). Please come and see if you like us – our next meeting is on 10th April, commencing at 2 pm in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand. We charge just £3 which includes refreshments. Our April speaker will be Neil Storey, entertaining us with a talk entitled Grim Tales ad Dark Deeds. We hope to see you there!
